Closing arguments began October 25, and the jury deliberations began that same day. Brooks had been arrested three weeks prior to the Waukesha attack for hitting his ex-girlfriend, and ramming the woman with the same vehicle during a domestic dispute at a gas station in Milwaukee.

Also, while the Sonos system supports Dolby Digital 2.0, Dolby Digital 5.1, and PCM, it doesn't support 7.1, DTS, Dolby Atmos, or other technologies an independent receiver might. Now, that's two wires in what a lot of people say is a "wireless" setup, but neither of them are speaker wires. Like I said, I have a large, open, octagonal living room, so eliminating the speaker wires is a huge plus. You can spend millions of dollars on it if you have the obsession and the bank to back it up with. Sonos, for what it delivers, didn't feel exorbitant to me in the least. It's not budget priced, and for a lot of people, that'll be a deal breaker.

There’s also just a tinge of metallic attack in the upper midrange. I created a simple setup for the test using a pair of Bowers and Wilkins AM-1 outdoor speakers. I honestly couldn’t hear much difference in sound or even volume level.

The difference is that the Playbar also connects to your TV. Disappointingly, there’s just one way to do this, and that’s via digital optical cable. Hidden behind the Beam’s seamlessly wrapped cloth grill is a center-mounted tweeter, four full-range woofers, and three passive bass radiators, all of which have been custom-designed by Sonos specifically for the Beam. Sitting atop its smooth surface are the same touch-sensitive controls from the Sonos One, plus the microphone array needed to pick up voice commands. Hilmar Lehnert, a senior director of audio at Sonos, told Digital Trends that getting a mic array to discern voices from music is a lot harder when you’ve got five drivers all pumping out sound, instead of just two, like on the Sonos One.

Soundbars have been replacing traditional "home theaters in a box" for years now. Their convenience level has always been high enough, and they've now gotten good enough, that sticking them below a TV is simply more attractive for most people than fiddling with a multiple-component set up. Since both soundbar-based home theaters and Sonos systems are designed to be simple to set up and easy to expandable, it really is a match made in geek heaven. Sonos says it designed the Beam to be really good at enhancing dialogue, something that often plagues home theater setups.

The Duran Duran live album "Arena" conjured up an impressive soundstage that wasn't apparent with a single speaker. Bass was surprisingly deep and the occasionally-challenging keyboard stings were held in check. Sonos' stereo mode works a lot better now than it used to, with none of the phasing effects of the past.

That means it gives you access to massive amounts of streamed music. The Beam’s ability to produce convincing bass without the aid of a separate subwoofer grew increasingly impressive. Compared to the PlayBarand the PlayBase, the Sonos Beam holds up remarkably well.

Not only does it mean the system can now reach James Blake levels of bass with rousing power, it also adds weight to big movie effects and helps the whole presentation fill the room more thoroughly. The big question, of course, is how the Sonos Playbar sounds, so we kick off with a spot of Premier League football. If you do go for the standard laid down orientation, you also need to be aware that the Playbar’s feet don’t lift it very high, so it won’t straddle a TV pedestal in the way the Yamaha YSP-2500 helpfully does. Sonos offers a 1-year limited warranty on all of its products.

If you have bare wire or spades there are optional binding post adapters. I would have preferred however to just have five-way binding posts and not deal with extra parts. Once the Sonos One has been connected to your network and you’ve named it , the app will prompt you to use Trueplay room-tuning software from Sonos. We strongly suggest you take the 2 minutes or so that this requires to get the speaker sounding its best – it really does make a significant difference. The first Blu-ray up was "Deepwater Horizon," about the offshore oil rig mega-disaster in 2010. The explosive deluge of water, mud and oil had more dynamic impact than we usually experience with sound bar or base systems.

I expect you’re now thinking, “But I don’t need that much power to drive in-ceiling speakers,” and that’s true, the Connect Amp does the job just fine with 125 watts. But Sonos is showing off the Amp as an amp to drive your front speakers in your main setup. 125 watts just doesn’t cut it for larger tower speakers and some bookshelf speakers.

Otherwise, nothing else really competes with the Sonos Beam. The Sonos One should last longer than most smart speakers given expected updates and Sonos’ ability to build upon its flexible platform. As for build quality, the Sonos One is among the best-built powered speakers you can buy today, with the Riva Arena right up there with it. If you think Alexa is smart now, wait until you use it on a Sonos One speaker. By designing the Alexa Sonos skills from the ground up, the company has made getting the music you want on the speaker you want a breeze. For those who own multiple Sonos speakers, getting your favorite tracks playing in the right place is about to become a whole lot more fun.

That's fine if your TV has a central pedestal stand, but many TV today are supported by legs splayed far to either side, and many standard sound bases don't fit under them. It's also worth noting that many TVs only output stereo sound via optical, so to get proper Dolby Digital 5.1 your set-top box or DVD/Blu-ray player will need to do the decoding, and be connected directly to the Playbar. Do buy the Sonos Beam if you want huge sound from a small package and like the idea of some voice control for basic TV functions.

That's too bad, because the Playbase is the best home theater component Sonos has created. With gorgeous looks and vista-like sound, it's the kind of do-everything all-in-one speaker the Playbar never was. While the sound bar really needs the optional Sonos Sub, the Playbase does perfectly well without it. Apple TV finally supports 7.1 surround, and iTunes content is starting to go 7.1.

Apart from the optical cable, the only other connections are Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Unlike most competitors, the Sonos lacks a Bluetooth connection, but due to the number of music services Sonos supports, we don't think you'll miss it. A sound base is a flat box of a speaker designed to sit underneath a TV's stand.

But is the Beam as “Sonos simple” as the company’s prior products? I must admit, I was quite confused as to what Sonos is trying to accomplish with this new product. Yes, it has more power than the Connect Amp and I know it’s aimed at custom installers , but what else does it offer and is there a wow factor for homeowners? I did an A-B comparison of the new Amp and the old Connect Amp to see if I could hear the differences. Let’s see if the new Amp is worth the $100 premium over the old Connect Amp. It’s time to check out another new Sonos product, this time it’s the all new Sonos Amp.

About a year after I bought it — and after the warranty expired — it started vomiting bogus high-definition copy protection errors and refusing to play any content from my Apple TV or Blu-Ray player. I spent a few weeks cursing and telling Hollywood where they could go shove their consumer hostility. But it's a shame the set-up can't handle DTS or any of the higher quality soundtracks such as Dolby TrueHD – the latter due to the limitations of the bandwith of the optical connection. The Playbar is capable of going pretty darn deep for a product of its type, too, although it does struggle with the very lowest bass note on the track.

In the meantime the Sonos One offers the best combination of versatility, sound quality and affordability in any speaker you can buy, period. With excellent sound and the choice of Alexa or Google Assistant, the Sonos One reaffirms its place as the best smart speaker for the money. Finishing up with CDs and other two-channel music recordings from Radiohead and Drive-By Truckers, the Playbase didn't disappoint. David Bowie's final album, "Blackstar," sounded absolutely terrific, with pitch-perfect tight bass, lively dynamics and Bowie's vocal that all rang true.

As much as we love Sonos, the Riva Concert recently forced us to reconsider our expectations of a compact, connected smart speaker. With full Alexa support and fantastic sound, plus Bluetooth, aux-in, a USB port, and an identical price to the Sonos One, well, what can we say? It’s the first speaker to give Sonos some serious competition, and you owe it to yourself to check it out before making your decision. Just over 2 inches tall, it's squat enough to nestle beneath larger splayed-leg TV sets.

Don’t buy it if you are super picky about sound quality and need audiophile-grade performance. We in the tech biz toss the term “wireless multiroom audio” around a lot, but what Sonos really does is put great-sounding music in every corner of your home or business — while making it dead simple. We like to think of Sonos as the audio company Apple wishes it could be — one that gives you amazing sound that “just works.” So what could possibly raise our enthusiasm about the company and its wares?

Thanks to Sonos’ microphone implementation, you can issue these voice commands from just about anywhere within earshot of the speaker. We were also impressed with how music could be blaring at full volume, but the microphones still caught us when we said, “Alexa,” to bring the speaker to attention. With great sound, a compact size and the option of either Google Assistant or Alexa, the Sonos One reaffirms its place as the best smart speaker for the money.

Many mainstream customers may not care, but given the cost, flexibility of the system, and how many enthusiasts like both Sonos and higher speaker numbers, it feels like a major missing feature. The Playbar has six mid-woofers to cover the low frequencies and three tweeters to cover the high, all driven by nine class-D amplifiers. The left and right tweeters are angled out to project sound as widely as possible.More importantly, it's a "smart" component. According to Sonos, the Playbar makes 24 million calculations per second, adding, subtracting, equalizing, and otherwise intelligently adjusting each element to keep the system in balance. Prior to Sonos I had a 7.1 surround sound system based off of a Pioneer receiver.

The Playbase comes without a remote, but using the Sonos app you can program your TV clicker to mute and alter the volume of the speaker. Note that it no longer has an onboard calibration mic -- Sonos' Trueplay app removed the need for that. The top of the speaker is reinforced and designed to hold televisions up to 75 pounds .

And while optical outputs on TVs are pretty common these days, they haven’t been for that long. You definitely want to check if your TV’s got one before forking out on a Sonos Playbar. The Sonos Beam has since launched with HDMI, should you prefer a Sonos TV speaker with this connection.

If I was given the choice of buying a single Sonos Beam or two Ones, it'd be close. The Beam is great for home theater with its HDMI port but it's not so great at music. If you want to do home listening only then a pair of Ones is a superior choice. I actually owned the 5.1 setup but once I purchased an Nvidia shield android tv that supports pretty much everything. It only supports dolby and no software update will provide dts support .

Another interesting reason to use the Amp is it can handle two speakers per channel, for a total of four speakers driven. Both of those features are more useful to a custom integrator and most homeowners won’t have to drive four speakers or drive a 4-ohm load. For custom integrators, the Amp is a good successor to the Connect Amp and as an integrator myself, I welcome the new Amp to Sonos’s lineup for large whole house audio projects. Setup is easy, like any Sonos product; unbox it, connect all the wires, then open the Sonos app and follow the instructions. The unit is designed to work right out of the box with banana connectors, you just slide them into the slots.

But I'm going through a phase of buying less, but buying better. I'm also willing to buy one element at a time, and space them out. That approach might not suit everyone, but it's currently suiting me. First, it uses digital audio to connect and not HDMI, so Hollywood couldn't prevent me from watching content I legally bought and paid for anymore. It’s all gain then, but its gain that you have to pay a great deal for – and given the Playbar’s level of quality in its own right it’s a stretch that only the wealthy or very dedicated should really consider.

The Sonos One integrates both Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, with better sound quality than any smart speaker at its price. It offers smart home controls from both systems and its far-field microphone performs well. The Sonos One works seamlessly with Sonos multiroom system and can pair with a second One for stereo sound.

If you're used to dinky little speakers like the Home Mini or the Echo Dot one striking thing about using an assistant through the Sonos is the quality of their voices. They longer sound like they're coming through a telephone receiver, instead more resembling an actual human voice, which makes intelligibility a little easier, too. We had a Sonos Playbar on hand to compare, and the two weren't so different, but the Playbase's bass had more oomph. Compared against the Bose SoundTouch 300, however, both Sonos speakers lacked the "stickyness" of the Bose's wide effect -- it disappears if you turn your head.

If you’re used to talking to Alexa through an Echo speaker or Fire TV device, you already know that Alexa is pretty good at deciphering your requests and turning them into actions. Alexa isn’t perfect, though, so if you’re new to this, expect a bit of a learning curve when figuring out what Alexa can and can’t do. Routines are a set of tasks that Google Assistant can perform with a single voice command -- for example "Hey Google I'm Leaving" can turn off all of your lights and the TV.

Within just a couple of seconds it’s clear that this is a massive improvement over even the most impressive-sounding flatscreen TV. The width of the soundstage that’s created is mighty impressive, and there’s detail, weight and tonal balance that a TV on its own simply can’t deliver. If you want all the convenience of Alexa , along with Sonos’ intuitive system and excellent sound quality, the Sonos One remains one of the best you can get. Say a command like, “Alexa, play my jazz playlist in the kitchen,” and the Sonos speaker in your kitchen will begin playing your music in seconds. Ask the speaker to “play the Trends with Benefits podcast in the den,” and you’ll soon be listening to DT’s Greg Nibler and Ryan Waniata cutting it up over the latest tech in an entertaining half-hour podcast.

I will say the Amp sounds more effortless than the Connect Amp, but that’s about it. Distortion seemed lower as well, but again, the difference was small. Although there is only a $100 price gap, I feel this represents just a minor revision of the Connect Amp, not an upgrade or serious improvement in sound and volume. The Amp is more squarely aimed at the custom integration market with its rack mount and cooler running temperature, but that’s where the differences end. Like other speakers of its kind, the Sonos One is a mono design, but as expected the sound got much better when I paired it with a second One.

The fact that it even gets close is impressive, but if you want to hear even those near sub-sonic notes you do have an option – add a Sonos Sub. Having said that, it seems Sonos has gone for a sound that’s more atmospheric than full of impact. It sounds as if it’s firing sound upwards rather than out into the room and to the listening position, especially if you’ve laid it flat. That seems more of a design decision than a fault to us, but it does mean the presentation is a little less involving than it could be. Set-up is dead simple using the Android or iOS app, which takes you through adding the Playbar in the same way as any other Sonos component as well as taking you step-by-step though the connection process.

Sonos Amp Review

I don’t recommend running out to replace all your Connect Amps with the new Amps. For people that need multiple zones of audio in a rack mounted setup though, the Amp is definitely the way to go. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send reluctant Karl Pilkington to Egypt to see the Great Pyramids. He tries out a traditional Egyptian outfit, experiences Cairo night life, and comes across a restaurant whose staff are all deaf. Karl Pilkington returns home, where Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant attempt to ascertain what he has learned on his journey in the series finale. Ricky and Steve send Karl to Egypt to see the Pyramids of Giza, a wonder he has little interest in visiting.

Along the way Karl prepares a feast for an African tribal king, encounters a rhinoceros and comes across a hippo that lives in a house all before having to trek 10 hours in to the jungle. In this episode we see Karl go through Cosmonaut training, have a fight with a Mongolian wrestler, visit a Dwarf Village theme park and get buried alive. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send reluctant Karl Pilkington to see Chichen Itza in Mexico. Arriving in the middle of the Easter celebrations, Karl witnesses a crucifixion, is forced to do Mexican wrestling, and learn cowboy skills. Karl is somewhat excited at the prospect of visiting Petra, Jordan but first Ricky and Steve decide to send him on a detour to Israel, a place he's less excited about visiting. Karl is sent to India to see the Taj Mahal but he gets an unexpected surprise when it turns out he's visiting during the Hindu festival of Holi, and he struggles to adapt to the Indian lifestyle.

Karl Comes Home

It's the final leg of the journey as Karl and Warwick prepare to make their way to China. A surprise also awaits to ensure this third season finishes on a high. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send Karl to America to travel the length of one of the most famous roads in the world, Route 66.

But before he can get there, he's forced to visit the largest religious festival in the world, stay in an Ashram with a living Saint, and play with cow poo. Karl and Warwick's journey continues via India. Laughing yoga and parts in a Bollywood movie are trumped when Karl experiences his first holiday highlight.

Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send reluctant Karl Pilkington to see Petra in Jordan. But before he even gets there, Karl's forced to go on a tour of the Middle East that takes in the religious sights of Israel, a tour of Palestine, and the Dead Sea. During his trip, Karl goes to a cuddle party, prospects for gold, spends time with an Amish family, joins a high school choir and has to choose between going wing-walking or taking part in a Mr. Leather contest. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send Karl to Alaska to go whale watching. Karl takes a ride on a dog sled, stays with the local Inuit community, eats raw frozen meat and get very sick on a deep sea fishing trawler. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send Karl to the island paradise of Vanuatu. In this first episode we see Karl attempt two very different types of bunjee jump, spend some quality time with a tribe that worship Prince Philip, go sand boarding and wear some very exotic underwear.

It's Suzanne, his longtime girlfriend, calling to find out how the DVD player works. You can take the boy out of Little England, but you can't take the Little England out of the boy. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send Karl to Australia to swim with Dolphins. Once in Oz, Karl discovers that, although he is diving with something, there's not a dolphin in site. Karl Pilkington finally returns home after travelling around the world to see the Seven Wonders of the World. Back in Britain he's quizzed about his travels abroad by his friends Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, who want to find out if he's actually learned anything from his experiences.

Karl tells them about what he thinks he's learned from these travels. Say what you will about Pilkington, but An Idiot Abroad makes the most of its charisma-free star. Series directors Krishnendu Majumdar and Luke Campbell also have an eye for setting up shots that wryly emphasize Pilkington's fish-out-of-water status—like when he dines alone at a Pizza Hut in the shadow of the Great Pyramid. In the most sublimely funny moment in the series, Pilkington answers his cell phone while visiting the step pyramid at Chichen Itza at dawn.

Karl, now back in Britain after his "seven wonders" trips, sits down with Ricky and Stephen to discuss the experience. Stephen is confused by Karl's seemingly contradictory statements about not wanting to miss the many sights and sounds on his travels, but also being overly annoyed by them. Many of the situations Karl experienced he classifies as false fun, which he does not like in principle.

Discussing the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead, Pilkington notes that “We find it all a bit morbid, death. We certainly don't like to talk about it… but then we waste days dedicated to like Pancake Tuesday. ” Pilkington might not be an ideal tour guide, but he does have a pithy way of distilling each of the countries he's visited.
