That's fine if your TV has a central pedestal stand, but many TV today are supported by legs splayed far to either side, and many standard sound bases don't fit under them. It's also worth noting that many TVs only output stereo sound via optical, so to get proper Dolby Digital 5.1 your set-top box or DVD/Blu-ray player will need to do the decoding, and be connected directly to the Playbar. Do buy the Sonos Beam if you want huge sound from a small package and like the idea of some voice control for basic TV functions.
The Playbase comes without a remote, but using the Sonos app you can program your TV clicker to mute and alter the volume of the speaker. Note that it no longer has an onboard calibration mic -- Sonos' Trueplay app removed the need for that. The top of the speaker is reinforced and designed to hold televisions up to 75 pounds .

And while optical outputs on TVs are pretty common these days, they haven’t been for that long. You definitely want to check if your TV’s got one before forking out on a Sonos Playbar. The Sonos Beam has since launched with HDMI, should you prefer a Sonos TV speaker with this connection.
If I was given the choice of buying a single Sonos Beam or two Ones, it'd be close. The Beam is great for home theater with its HDMI port but it's not so great at music. If you want to do home listening only then a pair of Ones is a superior choice. I actually owned the 5.1 setup but once I purchased an Nvidia shield android tv that supports pretty much everything. It only supports dolby and no software update will provide dts support .

Another interesting reason to use the Amp is it can handle two speakers per channel, for a total of four speakers driven. Both of those features are more useful to a custom integrator and most homeowners won’t have to drive four speakers or drive a 4-ohm load. For custom integrators, the Amp is a good successor to the Connect Amp and as an integrator myself, I welcome the new Amp to Sonos’s lineup for large whole house audio projects. Setup is easy, like any Sonos product; unbox it, connect all the wires, then open the Sonos app and follow the instructions. The unit is designed to work right out of the box with banana connectors, you just slide them into the slots.
If you have bare wire or spades there are optional binding post adapters. I would have preferred however to just have five-way binding posts and not deal with extra parts. Once the Sonos One has been connected to your network and you’ve named it , the app will prompt you to use Trueplay room-tuning software from Sonos. We strongly suggest you take the 2 minutes or so that this requires to get the speaker sounding its best – it really does make a significant difference. But I'm going through a phase of buying less, but buying better. I'm also willing to buy one element at a time, and space them out. That approach might not suit everyone, but it's currently suiting me. First, it uses digital audio to connect and not HDMI, so Hollywood couldn't prevent me from watching content I legally bought and paid for anymore. It’s all gain then, but its gain that you have to pay a great deal for – and given the Playbar’s level of quality in its own right it’s a stretch that only the wealthy or very dedicated should really consider.
The Sonos One integrates both Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, with better sound quality than any smart speaker at its price. It offers smart home controls from both systems and its far-field microphone performs well. The Sonos One works seamlessly with Sonos multiroom system and can pair with a second One for stereo sound.
If you're used to dinky little speakers like the Home Mini or the Echo Dot one striking thing about using an assistant through the Sonos is the quality of their voices. They longer sound like they're coming through a telephone receiver, instead more resembling an actual human voice, which makes intelligibility a little easier, too. We had a Sonos Playbar on hand to compare, and the two weren't so different, but the Playbase's bass had more oomph. Compared against the Bose SoundTouch 300, however, both Sonos speakers lacked the "stickyness" of the Bose's wide effect -- it disappears if you turn your head.
If you’re used to talking to Alexa through an Echo speaker or Fire TV device, you already know that Alexa is pretty good at deciphering your requests and turning them into actions. Alexa isn’t perfect, though, so if you’re new to this, expect a bit of a learning curve when figuring out what Alexa can and can’t do. Routines are a set of tasks that Google Assistant can perform with a single voice command -- for example "Hey Google I'm Leaving" can turn off all of your lights and the TV.
Within just a couple of seconds it’s clear that this is a massive improvement over even the most impressive-sounding flatscreen TV. The width of the soundstage that’s created is mighty impressive, and there’s detail, weight and tonal balance that a TV on its own simply can’t deliver. If you want all the convenience of Alexa , along with Sonos’ intuitive system and excellent sound quality, the Sonos One remains one of the best you can get. Say a command like, “Alexa, play my jazz playlist in the kitchen,” and the Sonos speaker in your kitchen will begin playing your music in seconds. Ask the speaker to “play the Trends with Benefits podcast in the den,” and you’ll soon be listening to DT’s Greg Nibler and Ryan Waniata cutting it up over the latest tech in an entertaining half-hour podcast.
Don’t buy it if you are super picky about sound quality and need audiophile-grade performance. We in the tech biz toss the term “wireless multiroom audio” around a lot, but what Sonos really does is put great-sounding music in every corner of your home or business — while making it dead simple. We like to think of Sonos as the audio company Apple wishes it could be — one that gives you amazing sound that “just works.” So what could possibly raise our enthusiasm about the company and its wares?
I will say the Amp sounds more effortless than the Connect Amp, but that’s about it. Distortion seemed lower as well, but again, the difference was small. Although there is only a $100 price gap, I feel this represents just a minor revision of the Connect Amp, not an upgrade or serious improvement in sound and volume. The Amp is more squarely aimed at the custom integration market with its rack mount and cooler running temperature, but that’s where the differences end. Like other speakers of its kind, the Sonos One is a mono design, but as expected the sound got much better when I paired it with a second One.
The fact that it even gets close is impressive, but if you want to hear even those near sub-sonic notes you do have an option – add a Sonos Sub. Having said that, it seems Sonos has gone for a sound that’s more atmospheric than full of impact. It sounds as if it’s firing sound upwards rather than out into the room and to the listening position, especially if you’ve laid it flat. That seems more of a design decision than a fault to us, but it does mean the presentation is a little less involving than it could be. Set-up is dead simple using the Android or iOS app, which takes you through adding the Playbar in the same way as any other Sonos component as well as taking you step-by-step though the connection process.
Sonos Amp Review
I don’t recommend running out to replace all your Connect Amps with the new Amps. For people that need multiple zones of audio in a rack mounted setup though, the Amp is definitely the way to go. I don’t understand the need for HDMI ARC in a two-channel configuration since you’d give up the dialog speaker.
